One of the most common questions from retailers and distributors new to the decorative door mat category is: should I stock felt mats, coir mats — or both? The honest answer is that both products serve different purposes, appeal to different consumers and perform differently in different environments. Understanding the key differences will help you build a better collection and avoid common sourcing mistakes.

At PAM Innovations, we manufacture both digitally printed felt mats and tufted coir mats across nine collections. This guide draws on that manufacturing experience to give you a clear, practical comparison.

Material & Construction

Felt Mats

Digitally printed felt mats are made from a polyester felt base — a dense, non-woven synthetic fabric that provides a smooth, uniform surface ideal for high-resolution digital printing. The polyester base is lightweight, consistent in thickness and accepts ink with excellent colour fidelity. Felt mats are typically softer underfoot than coir mats, which makes them well suited to indoor residential environments and areas where comfort as well as decoration is a priority.

Coir Mats

Tufted coir mats are made from natural coconut coir fibre — one of the toughest natural fibres available. The coarse, textured surface is exceptionally effective at removing dirt, mud and moisture from shoes before they enter a building. For bleached coir mats in particular, the lighter surface colour significantly enhances the depth and vibrancy of digitally printed artwork, making bleached coir the preferred substrate for premium printed coir mat production.

Key insight: The choice between felt and coir is not just about aesthetics — it is fundamentally about where the mat will be used and what it needs to do. Felt excels at decoration and indoor comfort. Coir excels at dirt removal and natural texture.

Print Quality Comparison

Both felt mats and coir mats can carry digitally printed designs with excellent results — but there are differences in how the print appears on each surface.

Print Factor Felt Mats Coir Mats
Base surface Smooth, uniform Textured, fibrous
Colour vibrancy Very high High (bleached base)
Fine detail reproduction Excellent Good
Natural texture visible through print No Yes — adds character
Print technology Digital printing XTR Digital printing
Best for Detailed artwork, portraits, florals Natural themes, landscapes, seasonal

The visible texture of coir fibre actually adds a unique quality to printed designs on coir mats — it gives the artwork a natural, almost painterly appearance that many consumers find more premium than a completely flat printed surface. This is one reason why coir mats are particularly popular for nature-inspired, coastal and seasonal designs.

Durability & Performance

Indoor Performance

For indoor use — hallways, living rooms, kitchen entrances — both felt and coir mats perform well. Felt mats are generally softer and more comfortable underfoot in indoor settings. Coir mats, while slightly rougher, provide better dirt removal at an indoor doorway — which is their primary functional purpose.

Outdoor & High-Traffic Performance

For outdoor use or high-traffic commercial entrances, coir mats have a clear advantage. The natural resilience of coir fibre gives it better durability under heavy foot traffic, and its natural moisture resistance makes it more suitable for covered outdoor positions. Felt mats are generally not recommended for outdoor use or prolonged exposure to moisture.

Backing Options

Both felt mats and coir mats are available with different backing options that affect performance, price point and market positioning:

Backing Available For Best Use
Latex Backing Both felt & coir mats Premium range, natural material preference
Crumb Rubber Backing Felt mats Mid-range retail, good grip
PVC Backing Coir mats Standard retail, cost-effective
